I hypothesize this chronological progression :
* Connection
* To connect
* Connected used as an adjective
* Connective applied to something that connects
* This unnecessary 'word' connectivity, meaning no more than being connected or the ability to be so
Having said that, I can quite easily believe that, if connection comes from French / Italian, there might have been an earlier form such as connective
